Description
A convenient and easy hike, Tank Hollow Trail rewards hikers with a beautiful panoramic overlook. The iconic Pennsylvania view features white rapids sparkling in the Lehigh River as it curves around forested mountains, covered with a combination of evergreens and deciduous trees. The trail is located on State Game Lands #141 in eastern Pennsylvania. To enjoy the full hike, adventurers should plan to park in the large lot located just off of the main road. Watch for the sign welcoming visitors to State Game Lands. For a shorter hike, if the gates are open, there's an option to drive and park in other small lots. There are no facilities available at the lots or along the trail.Starting from the main lot, hike along the gravel road. Here, hikers can enjoy looking at an assortment of plant life, including wildflowers and blueberry bushes. A variety of birds can be seen and heard chirping as you hike past meadow and wooded areas. The first portion of the trail following the road is in the open with little shade. As the road enters a more densely wooded section, watch for a painted arrow on a tree, and a small trail sign indicating a turn into the woods. This section of the trail is under tree cover and supports different plant life including delicate ferns that thrive in the partial shade. This part of the trail appears to be regularly muddy since there is a well-worn side path paralleling the soggy parts of the trail. After hiking through the woods, adventurers will walk past an area of dense bushes. The foliage seems to end abruptly and hikers will come out of the woods to a rocky outcrop. Using caution, hikers can walk onto the rocks to enjoy the expansive view. Before returning on the same trail, take time to sit on the rocks and relax. Breathe the fresh air and watch for birds gliding overhead. Notice the railroad tracks on one side of the river. There's also a trail that winds alongside the other side of the river. It is Lehigh Gorge Trail, but that's an adventure for another day.
