Description
The Kapalua Coastal Trail is an accessible path that traverses a variety of terrains and areas of interest in the resort area north of Lahaina on Maui's western coast. The trail crosses a mostly paved path from the resorts along Bay Club Place on its southern end to DT Fleming Park at its northern end. Over the course of its route, the trail passes by Kapalua Bay Beach, the Kapalua Cliffhouse and nearby cliff jumps and tidepools, Oneloa Bay Beach, an access trail to Dragon's Pointe lava cliffs, and eventually hits DT Fleming Beach and Park.Much of the trail fronts large resort properties, which offers the mixed features of it being very scenic and well-maintained, while also remaining very busy at most hours. The busiest section is from Kapalua Bay to the small Kapalua Parking area just above Oneloa Bay Beach. From here, those continuing north will pass a scenic but mostly unremarkable path following a sidewalk sandwiched by a large heiau perched over the ocean and the Ritz Carlton property. DT Fleming Beach Park has a small cafe/bar and a more intimate feeling beach, along with larger and less crowded parking lots. This path is great for those looking for a stretch of walking path with easy access, or those looking to get in some outdoor distance before arriving at their beach destination, and is especially good for being able to explore a variety of island terrains in a maintained small area. And with the resorts in view throughout nearly the entirety of the hike, if you like to wash down your hikes with a drink and a view, this path may be ideal. The best time to visit the trail is early mornings, before the beach crowds all rush these scenic shores. The trail is open sunrise to sunset. Parking is limited and fills up quick near the resorts. If parking is full, there are additional lots near the northern end of the trail which typically have more space.
