Description
This route gives those without 4WD access to Handies Peak. This requires hiking over a pass at about 13k ft before descending and connecting with the Handies Peak - Southwest Slopes route. From Silverton get on CO-2 towards Eureka. You'll stay on this road for about 10 miles, which should take about 30 minutes. The majority of this drive will be on a dirt road. A car with 2WD and good clearance should be okay. Expect some bumps and small rocks. You'll eventually get to a fork with CO-2 and CO-26. The trailhead is nearby on the right side of the road. You can park along the road. There isn't a sign marking the start of the trailhead, so look for switchbacks that ascend up the left side of the gulch. The trail starts out fairly steep. Once you make it to the top of the switchbacks, you'll be in a somewhat flatter area. Follow this and eventually you'll see a small lake on your right. This is a great place to grab water and a snack to prepare for a steeper climb to a 13k ft pass. Once you are over the pass, you descend about 500 ft until eventually connecting with the Handies Peak - Southwest Slopes Trail. The trail goes by Sloan Lake that is great for a quick swim on the way down.
