Features

Higgins Lake has a reputation as being one of the most beautiful lakes in Michigan. Thousands of fishermen and pleasure boaters are attracted to its ultra clear water and scenic shorelines. Heavy recreational boating traffic occurs on weekends and holidays. At these peak times, expect delays at the landings. The state parks along the north and south shorelines are extremely popular with both campers and boaters during the summer. “The Cut” from the Hwy 100 bridge down stream to Lansing Road is a popular day float trip with canoeists.

Forage

Sand shiner, emerald shiner, bluntnose minnow, and Spottail shiner are abundant. In the late 1960’s, smelt were illegally introduced into Higgins Lake. Presently the smelt population is in a state of decline. Brown trout feed heavily on small perch. Northern pike utilize the trout, perch, cisco and smelt. Mayfly larvae (wigglers) are important component of the perch diet.
