Ultimate Adventure 2020 Highlights

The Ultimate Adventure, organized on by 4Wheeler, is quite literally, the ultimate adventure for the toughest off-road enthusiasts. The event just wrapped up its 21st year on a journey across Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. Each year, 20-25 vehicles and drivers are chosen for a 7-day, self-supported adventure. Participants are required to conquer a handful of challenging trails throughout the week and do not know the route until the morning of each day.

onX Offroad was proud to be the official mapping tool of the 2020 Ultimate Adventure. For the first time in 21 years, drivers installed the onX Offroad App on their phones and tablets so they could track their trip to save for later and mark Waypoints along the way, such as cool campsites and future off-roading routes. Ted Livingston and Rory Edwards of onX Offroad took part in the week-long adventure in Rory’s 2008 Jeep® JK Rubicon, outfitted with 37” Falken Wild Peak M/T tires, Skyjacker shocks, KC lights, and a GFC Superlight rooftop tent.

Offroad Team on the Trail

Ted says they had a blast, not only seeing beautiful new places, but also introducing the Ultimate Adventure drivers to onX Offroad. “All of the drivers were using the App,” said Ted. “They were recording their Tracks and using the Discover feature to see what other trails were nearby. It was fun to hear people over the radio asking questions about the App, or pointing out cool features to other people, such as Featured Trails, rec points, or new camping zones.” He and Rory enjoyed setting up camp each night and getting to show people how to get the most out of their newest off-road tool. Ted said it was great to see people get excited about coming back with their families to explore areas they marked in their App.

Unexpected Turn of Events

Everyday was an adventure as drivers navigated nasty obstacles, climbed over and around mountains, and pieced their way across the Wild West. On Day 3, things took an unexpected turn when wildfires spread to the group’s campspot. The crew had to turn to onX Offroad to locate a new campsite on the fly. Christian Hazel, Editor of Petersen’s 4Wheel & Off-Road Magazine, recapped:

We were greeted along our route by some very polite forest service workers who told us the area we were planning on camping was on fire and the whole area was closed. We thanked them for what they do and wished them a safe battle and turned back around to regroup with Ted Livingston and Rory Edwards from onX Offroad. With the help of our onX Offroad app, we found a bitchin’ campsite close to where we were turned away from our original route. Now it’s time to hit the onX Offroad app and come up with an alternate plan for tomorrow.
