Loop
This route begins and ends near the parking area by Doubling Gap Lake in Colonel Denning State Park, in Pennsylvania’s Cumberland County. This easy, family-friendly route follows yellow blaze markers through mixed hardwood forest along the lake shore. Interpretive panels along the trail highlight local geology, wildlife, and plant life, making it a popular option for school groups and hikers interested in nature study.
The terrain stays mostly level, with a short boardwalk section crossing wetland and occasional uneven footing from roots and rocks. Open year-round, the route passes several habitats with chances to spot birds, wildflowers, and small animals, though muddy conditions are common after rain. Leashed dogs are allowed, and no permits are required. Scenic views, gentle terrain, and educational panels make this a rewarding short route for nature-focused day hikes in the South Mountain region.
