Wickiup Plain + Moraine Lake Loop

The Wickiup Plain + Moraine Lake Loop combines the Elk Devils Trail, Wickiup Plains, Moraine Lake, and South Sister Climber Trails to form a 8.5 mile loop around Kaleetan Butte. Along the way you'll want to make two short out-and-back side trips - one to Wickiup Plain, and the other to Moraine Lake.Begin from the popular Devil's Lake Trailhead off Cascade Lakes Highway. Note that you'll need to secure a Central Oregon Cascades permit in advance, even just for day hiking.From the trailhead cross the highway and follow the Elk Devils Trail (#12) until it joins the Wickiup Plains Trail. Turn right.Continue along this trail until the Le Conte Crater Trail (#14.3). This is the first side trip. I'd recommended hiking out onto Wickiup Plain until you've gotten a great view of South Sister. This is also a great place to camp (permit required) if doing an overnight loop, although there is no water available.Retrace your steps then continue along what is now the Moraine Lake Trail (#17.1). Follow this trail all the way to Moraine Lake. The views here are stunning and you'll definitely want to take a break, and maybe even have a swim. If you are camping here (permit required) you can find multiple designated campsites behind the lake.Retrace your steps (this was the second out-and-back side trip of the loop) until you again reach the South Sister Climber Trail (#36). Follow this trail all the way back down to the trailhead where you first began.
