There and Back
The route from South Lake to Muir Hut is an approximately 40-mile out-and-back trail in the Eastern Sierra. The route connects the Bishop Pass Trail to the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail (PCT/JMT), leading to Muir Pass.
Starting at South Lake, the trail climbs nearly 6 miles to Bishop Pass, passing several alpine lakes and ascending steep switchbacks. Bishop Pass sits west of Mount Agassiz and overlooks Dusy Basin.
From the pass, the trail descends into Le Conte Canyon, meeting the PCT/JMT at the Le Conte Ranger Station. The route then heads north along the Middle Fork of the Kings River, passing through Little Pete Meadow and Big Pete Meadow before climbing to Muir Pass. The trail traverses the John Muir Wilderness within Inyo National Forest and enters Kings Canyon National Park.
